Neeraj Chopra: The Jevelin Legend from India
Neeraj Chopra is India’s star javelin thrower who won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 with a throw of 87.58m. He is now aiming to defend his title at the Paris Olympics 2024 and also break the 90m barrier. Here are some facts about his quest for Paris Olympics 2024:
- Neeraj Chopra has already qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 with a big throw of 88.77m in his first attempt, which also took him to the final of the javelin throw competition at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on August 25, 202312. He surpassed the entry standard of 85.50m for the Paris Olympics 20243.
- Neeraj Chopra has a personal best of 89.94m, which he achieved at the Stockholm Diamond League on June 30, 20222. He is the first Indian to win a Diamond League event and also the first Indian to throw beyond 89m.
- Neeraj Chopra is confident that he can touch the 90m mark with favourable weather and perfect technique. He said, "I need just one perfect day with favourable weather to touch that mark. I am working on my technique and fitness to achieve that goal."3
- Neeraj Chopra is also excited about the inclusion of breaking or breakdancing in the Olympics itinerary for Paris 2024. He said, "It’s a sport which is easy on the eyes. The music, the moves - it’s really fun and entertaining to watch."4
- Neeraj Chopra is an inspiration for many young athletes in India and around the world. He has received many accolades and awards for his achievements, including the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honour, in 2021.
